I am starting my first day of fasting today and I've got to admit to you that I do not like to fast. Fasting is hard and uncomfortable. But it is a fundamental form of prayer that we see in Scripture. Jesus gives His disciples a brief teaching on fasting, in the Sermon on the Mount, and He starts off this teaching by saying to them, "When you fast (Matthew 6:16)..." Not if you fast but when. There's an expectation that His disciples will go through times of fasting.
As I talked about on Saturday I would like this week to be the first of four weeks of fasting for us as a church. I am asking all of us to take one day a week over the next four weeks asking God to spiritually revive us, to breath new life into us through the power of His Spirit, to give us direction and provision for a new future and to give us unity of mind and spirit.
We see in Scripture that fasting is a time to seek the Lord and plead with Him for His help and intervention. It is a declaration of our humility and ultimate dependence before God and that apart from Him we can do nothing. Fasting is a bodily expression of repentance and brokenness before God and our desire to draw close to Him and have more of Him in our lives. During your time of fasting let the hunger of your body draw you into prayer to God, who is our true Source of provision, strength and nourishment.
Biblical fasting was often done from sunup to sundown, with eating no food through the day and resuming eating during dinner time. Water can be consumed during the time of fasting. If it is a health risk for you to go throughout the day without food, please do not and ask God if there is something else important to you that you can substitute for food.
As we seek God's face together, pray for a spiritual revival for our church, and seek God's guidance and provision there's no better place for us to start than to fast and to pray. We see in Scripture the power that fasting and humble prayer can have. Let us be fasting and praying for the power of God's Spirit to be poured out on our church. I am fasting today.
What will your day this week be? :)
Blessings to you,
